Caesarea - the port city - Caesarea next photo - 124 kb

What the city of Caesarea was famous for the ancient time was its port. It was the best port in the entire Levant, built according to the latest Roman science and technology, even better than in Alexandria port. Three closed harbors protected from all sides by breakwaters were there - outer, middle and inner, also piers, warehouses, port mechanisms, self-cleaning system of harbors with the help of specially arranged underwater channels, and etc. The port was called Sebastos, which in Greek means August (that is not a month, but the name of Caesar).
The picture shows the water area of the former port. The fisherman stands on the remains of the pier. In the background is the ancient Roman aqueduct, followed by New Caesarea and Mount Carmel.
