In 1187, the Crusaders were defeated by the Arabs at the Battle of Gattin, their army was defeated and the Arabs of Saladin began to capture the cities and castles of Palestine one by one. The turn of Caesarea came a year later. However, in 1191, the Franks returned to Caesarea and, since the Arabs broke the city fortifications before retreating, they had to rebuild fortification anew, which was done by 1217.
