About 1220, the Emir of Damascus appeared with an army under the walls of Caesarea. The city at that time was defended by Genoese mercenaries. According to some reports, they were taken by surprise, according to others, a banal agreement happened, in general, the Genoese retreated to the Citadel, where they resisted for 4 days , after that they dumped on ships home to Genoa. The Arabs again broke all fortifications, after which the once flourishing city of the Mediterranean became a little provincial village.
