The barrels were found in France - 12 pieces from the Russian battleship Alexander III (aka Volya), which had fled there in 1920 from Sevastopol, besieged by the Reds, and later sawn into scrap metal in Bizerte. Of these 12, 8 ended up in Finland, 4 were appropriated by Germany and later used on the battery of Garnsey Island in the English Channel. 3 barrels were used by the Finns to repair TM-3-12 railway transporters, the rest were used as spare ones on their 12-inch batteries.
