Western stone

Western stone - JerusalemNext photo - 115 kb

This stonework dates back to the 1st century BC to the time of Herod the Great. The stone work is of very high quality; you can’t stick a knife into the split between the stones. From above you can see the colossal size of the so-called 'Western Stone' which is a stone block measuring 13x3.5x4 m, weighing 580 metric tons. Ancient Jewish builders brought it here from a quarry, hewed it, adjusted it to its place, raised it to a height of 8 meters and installed it into the wall. The wall has a clearly visible slope to the left, inside of the Temple Mount, for greater stability of the structure. On the right are metal structures to support the above-mentioned Muslim Quarter of Old Jerusalem.
