Warren Gate

Warren Gate - JerusalemNext photo - 108 kb

The picture shows is what Warren Gate actually looks like in our difficult times. A clumsily made walling with small stones is visible. Once upon a time there was a 14-meter-wide tunnel up to the Temple Mount. The gates were allegedly walled up after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD. Under Emperor Hadrian, these passages were used as water tanks. In the Middle Ages, in the tunnel behind this wall there was a small synagogue called the 'Cave', the closest place to the supposed 'Holy of Holies' of the destroyed Temple.
