Transverse passages - JerusalemNext photo - 105 kb

To the right and to the left of the Secret Passage there are transverse passages ending in dead ends.
Excavations under the Western Wall were first started in 1864 by British archaeologist Charles Wilson. His compatriot, the famous military engineer and archaeologist Charles Warren, continued this works in 1867-70. He was famous for the fact that he is the only Western researcher who managed to excavate the Temple Mount (not without bribing the local Ottoman authorities, of course).
