Tomb of Absalom, son of King David

Tomb of Absalom, son of King David - JerusalemNext photo - 114 kb

The tomb was carved from a single piece of stone into the side of a valley. The hole in the wall was made in ancient times by tomb riders. Since the time of the Crusaders, it has been attributed to King Absolom (which is apparently erroneous, since it was made much later). It used to be an educational custom among ancient Jews to take their children here and throw stones at this tomb, as a sign of disrespect for the son who rebelled against his father.
