They are also called the 'Gate of Hulda' as it was written about it in ancient Jewish texts. Once they and another double gate to the west now hidden by the Crusader tower, were the main entrances to the Temple Mount. Behind them a wide tunnels led up to the esplanade in front of the Temple. These tunnels still exist and mosques are built upon them. The English archaeologist Charles Warren, who explored the Temple Mount in the 19th century, also discovered many underground tunnels and passages under these gates, located even below the level of the retaining walls. When these tunnels were made, where they lead and why is unknown to this day...
