Damascus Gate

Damascus Gate - Jerusalem next photo - 89 kb

They are also the Nablus Gate, in Arabic - Bab al-Amud, the main gate of the Muslim Quarter. They was built in 1537 by the Turks on the site of an ancient gate that existed here in the 1st century BC and was the main gate of Jerusalem. They were repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt in the same place. To the left of the bridge below there is a gate arch of Hadrian's time with the inscription 'Aelia Capitalina' (it was closed for repairs during my visit).
