Interiors of 11" battery

Sight of the shaft from inside. The shaft is closed by wooden shield.
The battery was built in 1868. It's construction consists of massive metal tower with gun-carriage upon it. The tower was suspended by chains with counterweight to the blocks fixed in the ceilings of the shaft. The tower could be moved up and down by the screw-jack fixed on the floor of the shaft.
