Former barracks were at first here, then military and criminal prisons (corps N1). It was nicknamed 'The Menagerie' because of its design - long corridors along open cells covered with bars. It once had a 2-story arcade. In the entire history of the Shlisselburg prison, only one escape from this prison was made and it was from this building. The caretaker from Gdov City School, Ivan Romashov, imprisoned in the fortress for drawing up a republican constitution for Russia, and on the night of April 5, 1849, he escaped from the cell on the top floor with the help of a guard soldier. Unfortunately, he was captured a couple of hours later in the city of Shlisselburg and taken to the Secret House of the Citadel in the fortress. He stayed there until 1867, after which he was exiled to the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, where he died 3 years later.
