The northern part of the island was considered as the most threatened, because here only a narrow strait separated the fortress and mainland. Ehrensvärd planned additional strengthening on the opposite side of the strait, but they were never built. For more antilanding protection of the fortress additional fortifications of tenaille form were built close to the water. The term tenaille is a French origin and can be translated as 'ticks'.
