Augustin Ehrensvärd died in October 1772 on his estate near Åbo. A few years later, his body was transported here and buried in the Main Courtyard of the fortress. The monument was designed by the Swedish court architect Johan Sergel and Erensvard's son Karl, based on a drawing made by the king Gustav III himself (as they say). Works of the installation of this monument ended several years before the shameful surrender of Sveaborg to Russian troops in 1808.
