According to the plan of the founder of Sveaborg, Augustin Jerensvärd, this island was to be the heart of the newly built fortress. The largest dry dock in northern Europe at that time for the Swedish skerry fleet was also built here. The island's fortifications were to form a double ring of defense on the south side of the dock. The inner ring was completed in 1764. The picture shows part of the outer ring of the island's fortifications - the Wrede bastion (1750-1753). The bastion is assigned to block the Tykistölahti Strait with fire from its cannons (aka the Artillery Strait between the Inzhenerny and Komendantsky islands).
