West gate 'botardo', Susisaari (Sveaborg)

West gate 'botardo'

West gate 'botardo'

The idea of this gate is simple. The gate construction is empty inside and therefore can float. The ship is brought into the dock, the 'botardo' is put in right place and filled with water. It sinks, locks the gate, after which water can begin to be pumped out of the dock. If it is necessary to remove the ship from the dock, it is filled back with water, the water is pumped out from the 'botardo', it floats up and gate could be open. The path is clear, the ship goes into the sea. In the historical annals it is noted that these gates were delivered from St. Petersburg itself, but this botardo is a new one from the 2000s. A replica, so to speak.
