The current building was built in 1881–1882 on the site of the Ekeblad bastion destroyed in the Crimean War. Since the building was soon painted blue after completion, it was called as 'Blue House'. It was intended for officer apartments for ranks of the engineering department. In 1918, concentration camp guards lived here. For some time there was a library of the Suomenlinna Museum, then the building was turned back into an apartment building, which it remains to this day.
