Way to the powder magazine depth

This battery was built in the 1880s and it is unknown if it was armed during the First World War. In the picture a manhole from the gallery into a inner premises with authentic wooden doors is shown. I have a strong feeling that this is nothing more than a former loophole, ie the battery was built initially for casemated gun's emplacements, and then was reconstructed for open gun's mountings.
