The street is named after the late Catholic Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria, built in the 13th century at the Dominican monastery. This once the largest of Tallinn's churches was blighted during the pogrom of 1525 (Reformation), and a little later it was burned to the ground and only 4 not high walls remained.
