Early in the morning of April 9, 1940 just through this strait, under the cover of morning fog the German invasion force, led by cruisers Königsberg and Köln, started their breakthrough to Bergen. Köln, who went first, managed to slip through, but the other ships got fire from the fort: Königsberg got three shells, one of them under the waterline, the training ship Bremse two hits, two more landing ships were hit too.
