Most likely, this establishment dates back to 1881, when Alexander III moved to the Gatchina Palace, after which the construction of sewerage and water supply began there. Before this, Russian autocrats used various kinds of devices, such as the “night cabinet,” which were simple mahogany boxes with a round hole on top.
