Golden Gate

Golden Gate - JerusalemNext photo - 98 kb

This is probably the oldest gate of the Temple Mount (but it is impossible to say for sure, since archaeological work here is strictly prohibited for religious reasons). In Hebrew the gate is called Sha'ar Ha-Rachamim, in Arabic - Bab al-Dhahabi. The current gate was built in the 520s AD on top of remains of ancient gate from the Second Temple era. Under the Muslims they were closed, under the Crusaders they were opened several times a year. The Ottomans of Suleiman the Magnificent restored them along with the city walls and finally walled them up in 1541, and the gate itself was used as a watchtower.
